Building an Anti-Racist Organization:
A conversation with Aminta Steinbach
Defining the term:
"Anti-racism is the active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices and attitudes, so that power is redistributed and shared equitably." - Alberta Civil Liberties Center
The path to change:
“The only way to undo racism is to consistently identify and describe it— and then dismantle it.” - Ibram X. Kendi
Let's ask and begin to answer some questions about:
Race Clarity: How do our racial identities play a role in our experiences on a team in our professional identity and interaction with systems?
Dominant Culture Practices :How do you visibilize dominant culture in your organizational practices?
White Supremacy: What is the importance of giving & receiving authentic feedback in dismantling white supremacy?
Antiracist Pivots: How do our hiring practices and admissions practices lead to low diversity?What/whose input am I minimizing?

Most recently Hand to Hand members have been participating in peaceful (and loud) demonstrations and protests as a part of a national reckoning and demand for racial justice. We have organized ourselves to put our skills to use as safety monitors and peacekeepers; acting as protectors and de-escalating as necessary using assertiveness and compassion skills practiced within our martial arts and self defense programs.
