About the Teaching Clinic
Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and bodywork
At the teaching clinic of the Seattle Institute of East Asian Medicine, we provide high-quality, comprehensive clinical care tailored to an individual patient’s needs. Our clinical faculty, each having over 10 years of experience providing patient care, include well-known scholars, specialized clinicians, and researchers. Our students are trained in small class settings and complete extensive clinical training in a variety of approaches and techniques used in East Asian Medicine (EAM).
Patients are able to schedule appointments with either a faculty member or a student intern. Our teaching clinics have a rotating schedule that changes each trimester. The clinic operates in Seattle at our main campus in Georgetown.
Additionally, SIEAM partners with Pike Market Senior Center, Neighborcare Health Youth Clinic at 45th Street, and Asian Counseling and Referral Services. These partnerships enable students to treat and shadow supervisors in diverse communities and healthcare treatment settings.

Specialty Oncology Clinic
Acupuncture and East Asian medicine can be very effective integrative therapy to help manage the side effects of cancer and its treatment. As part of SIEAM's Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine program, our 4th year students receive mentorship by our experienced faculty in providing supportive care for patients actively undergoing treatment for cancer and for those who have completed cancer treatment. We are able to work together with your oncology team, communicating effectively about our evidence-based approaches using acupuncture techniques for symptom management.
Commonly Asked Questions
How much does a treatment cost?
Our current rates range from $45–90 depending on the treatment.
Do you take insurance?
No, we do not take insurance. We are a self-pay clinic. We strive to keep our treatment rates low so that you can access care more regularly.
How often should I come?
Every person will have a different treatment plan, but acupuncture is a cumulative process. For most conditions, we recommend an initial month of weekly treatments, after which progress will be evaluated and a new treatment plan shared with you. Depending on the condition, some patients may follow up on an as-needed basis, while others may only need to come in for bi-weekly or monthly maintenance treatments.
What can I expect during a treatment?
Your first visit will include an intake conversation where your practitioner learns about your health history and current concerns. You'll then receive a treatment tailored to your needs, which may include acupuncture, herbal recommendations, or bodywork. Most patients find treatments deeply relaxing. Plan for your visits to take an hour.
What will I need to do to prepare for my first appointment?
First, fill out your intake forms ahead of time. If you are unable to fill them out beforehand, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to do so before your appointment time. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can roll up to the elbows and knees. Eat a light snack beforehand and come hydrated. When you first arrive, check in with the front desk for instructions on where to go.
What is the difference between booking with a student intern, a doctoral student intern, or a faculty preceptorship?
All treatments at our teaching clinic are supervised and held to the same standard of care. Student interns are completing their clinical training under direct faculty supervision. Doctoral student interns have already completed their master's-level training and are pursuing advanced clinical hours. Faculty preceptors are licensed practitioners who treat the patient directly, while students observe.
I am having difficulty affording regular care. What should I do?
Cost should not be a barrier to getting care. We offer a low-income discount designed to make regular treatment accessible. If you are experiencing financial difficulty, you can request our low-income discount at the front desk. This is only applicable to appointments in the acupuncture & herbal medicine clinic with student interns.
