Our Mission
The mission of SIEAM is to train compassionate and effective practitioners of East Asian Medicine who can function independently and collaboratively in patient-centered care.
This is achieved through apprentice-style clinical experiences coupled with an integrated curriculum emphasizing case-based instruction, physical palpation skills, qigong practice, Chinese language instruction and collaborative care experiences. Students practice a variety of approaches to East Asian medicine that engender awareness and respect for the validity of different healing traditions. This training allows graduates to develop their own unique approaches to the practice of this ancient medicine.
Our Programs
SIEAM’s programs are based on the philosophy that a small group of students, working in the clinic and classroom with experienced faculty practitioners, will gain a deep awareness of the vitality of East Asian approaches to health. The educational approach at SIEAM emphasizes learning a variety of approaches to the medicine with a hands-on focus that ensures sufficient practical and clinical expertise for graduates to be competent and successful.
SIEAM offers two graduate programs in East Asian Medicine.
Students can graduate in three years with the Master’s of Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine or in four years with the Doctorate of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine.
All students are enrolled into both programs. Students decide whether to graduate with their Master’s degree or continue to complete their Doctorate degree in their third year of study.
Masters of Acupuncture
& East Asian Medicine
Complete the three-year MAcEAM program to graduate with the MAcEAM degree.
At the end of the 3rd year, students can graduate with a Master’s degree, sit for the board exams, apply for acupuncture licensure, and see patients under their new license.
Doctorate of Acupuncture
& Herbal Medicine
Complete the full 4-year DAHM program to graduate with the DAHM Degree.
The DAHM program is completed in four years. The first three years of the program are the MAcEAM program. At the end of the 3rd year, students can register for the 4th year of the doctoral program, or DAHM.
While they complete their 4th year of study, students can sit for the board exams, apply for acupuncture licensure, and see patients under their new license. When they complete their 4th year of study, they will graduate with a Doctoral degree.

Our Philosophy
SIEAM represents a modern take on the age-old model of apprenticeship training.
Using this approach not only allows us to provide the highest level of clinical training available today, it also grounds our program in the traditional methodologies used for centuries in the training of medical practitioners.
Clinical Training
Clinical training begins within weeks of entering the program, so students graduate with nearly 3 years of hands-on experience working directly with patients.
Moreover, students are only supervised by clinicians with at least 10 years of experience (usually 15-20+ years) as opposed to the minimum requirement of 5 years.
Exposure to Variety
SIEAM curriculum exposes students to multiple styles in East Asian Medicine.

Medical Chinese
Students explore classical and contemporary texts in their original Chinese to enrich their understanding of fundamental concepts, case studies, and scientific research.
SIEAM uniquely includes medical Chinese language classes throughout the entire Master’s and Doctoral programs.
Small Cohorts
Students progress through our program in cohorts (a small class of students in the same year). There are about 10-12 students per cohort, on average.
These small class sizes enable our students to receive individualized attention early and often from faculty with 10+ years of clinical experience.
Qi Gong
The SIEAM curriculum is unique in that students participate in Qi Gong instruction and practice each week during all three years of the master’s programs. As a result, students are exposed to a variety of sequences and approaches in order to cultivate a lifelong practice, enhance clinical efficacy and provide effective patient interventions for a wide range of conditions.
